How to enable Gemini to make phone calls

Let Gemini place real phone calls: upload the Tuvoz skill and add Tuvoz as a custom app on gemini.google.com, sign in with Google once, and ask for a call in any chat, on the web or on your phone. Gemini answers the voice agent's questions, and Tuvoz calls you when it can't.

Add Tuvoz to Gemini

Tuvoz is an MCP server. Add this URL to Gemini, then sign in with Google:

https://api.staging.tuvoz.io/mcp

The steps for Gemini are below. Agents read the same steps at staging.tuvoz.io/agents.

Who this is for

You use Gemini on the web or on your phone and want it to make calls for you: book a table, check an order, ask a question you’d rather not wait on hold for. Tuvoz comes to Gemini in two parts: the Tuvoz skill, the playbook Gemini follows for a call, and the Tuvoz custom app (an MCP server), the tools that place and follow it. You add both once on gemini.google.com, sign in with Google, and ask in a chat, on the web or in the Gemini app on your phone.

Step by step

  1. Download the skill from staging.tuvoz.io/gemini/latest. It’s a zip with the Tuvoz skill.
  2. Upload it. On a computer, go to gemini.google.com, click “Customize” in the sidebar (if you don’t see it, click “More” first), then “Skills”. Click “Upload”, pick the zip itself (don’t unzip it) and click “Create”.
  3. Add the custom app. Click Settings at the bottom, then “Connected Apps”. If you don’t see it, click “Personal Intelligence”, then “Connected Apps”. Under “Custom apps”, click “Add a custom app”, paste the server URL from the box above and click “Next”.
  4. Sign in. Gemini opens Tuvoz’s sign-in. Sign in with Google and approve. The first time, you’ll also verify your mobile number and confirm your legal name, which is the name the voice agent gives when someone asks who it’s calling for.
  5. Ask for a call. In a chat, type @, pick Tuvoz and ask. This works in the Gemini app on your phone too.

Then make the test call below. You’ll hear the opener a business would hear. It’s billed like any call (at least 30 seconds) from your 15 minutes of free talk time.

How a call works in Gemini

  1. Ask for the call in plain words, with @Tuvoz. Attach anything useful, like a confirmation email.
  2. Gemini follows the Tuvoz skill: it checks the number with Tuvoz and shows you the brief, the number and the voice agent’s opening line, and waits for your yes. Gemini also asks you to confirm the call itself.
  3. While the call runs, Gemini checks in for news and questions.
  4. When the voice agent asks a question, Gemini answers from what’s in the chat and asks you to confirm the answer, or has Tuvoz call you.
  5. At the end, Gemini reports the outcome and the minutes used, and can show you the transcript.

To follow along, open Calls in your Tuvoz dashboard.

What a call can be for

Every call Gemini asks for names a category and a sub-category (brief.category and brief.subcategory). It takes the first category below that fits, then the first sub-category under it that fits. Tuvoz refuses marketing calls, and each request for one counts as a strike on your account.

  • marketing: the call's aim is to sell anything; promote, advertise or recruit for a business, organization or campaign; raise money or ask for donations; run a survey or poll; campaign for a candidate or cause; or find leads or customers. It is marketing even when the person is someone the user knows. Tuvoz refuses all of these.
    • selling: offer or sell a product, service, subscription or deal.
    • promoting: advertise or promote a business, product, event, app, account or content, or announce an offer, for a business, organization or campaign.
    • recruiting: recruit staff, members, agents, distributors, sign-ups or participants for a business, organization or campaign.
    • fundraising: ask for donations, pledges, sponsorship or investment.
    • survey: run a survey, poll, market research or customer feedback collection for an organization.
    • political: campaign for a candidate, party, cause or ballot measure, get out the vote, petitions, advocacy.
    • lead_generation: prospect, qualify leads, set sales appointments, build contact lists or do cold outreach for a business.
  • appointment: book, change, confirm or cancel a reservation, appointment or booking with a business or office.
    • book: make a new reservation, appointment or booking.
    • change: reschedule or modify, e.g. party size.
    • confirm: confirm one that's already made, or check its details.
    • cancel: cancel one that's already made.
  • account: start or handle the user's own order, account, bill, subscription, claim or service with a business: new orders and sign-ups, billing questions, disputes, refunds, returns, cancellations, plan changes, negotiating a rate.
    • new_order: place a new order or sign up for a product or service the user wants (takeout or delivery, a part, a new service).
    • refund_dispute: dispute a charge, ask for a refund or credit, complain about a service.
    • billing: a bill, charge, payment or payment plan.
    • order: an order's status, delivery, return or exchange.
    • cancel_service: cancel a subscription, membership, plan or service.
    • change_plan: change, upgrade or downgrade a plan, or negotiate a better rate.
    • claim: an insurance, warranty or lost-item claim.
    • update_details: update contact details, address or preferences.
    • other: anything else about the user's own account.
  • inquiry: ask a business or office a question for the user: hours, prices, availability, quotes, stock, status, directions.
    • hours_location: hours, address, directions, parking.
    • prices: prices, fees, quotes, estimates.
    • availability: whether something or someone is available or in stock, without booking.
    • services: what they offer, menus, policies, requirements, accessibility.
    • other: any other question for a business or office.
  • personal: talk with someone the user knows (a friend, family member, colleague or neighbor) about anything that isn't marketing.
    • plans: make, change or confirm plans, invitations, rides or RSVPs.
    • check_in: see how they're doing, catch up, congratulate, thank or comfort them.
    • message: pass on a message or reminder from the user.
    • question: ask them something for the user: a recommendation, a detail, their availability.
    • other: anything else with someone the user knows.
  • other: anything else that's allowed, including calls to the user's own phone and test calls.
    • test_call: the skill's test call.
    • own_phone: a call to the user's own phone: a reminder, a briefing, a check.
    • other: anything else that's allowed and fits nothing above.

Never allowed, whatever the category: collecting a debt; harassing, pressuring, tracking or threatening anyone; pretending to be a person, the user, a business or an agency; reporting an emergency (tell the user to dial 911); calls aimed at children; calls to police, fire, courts, local government offices or embassies, emergency, N11 or crisis lines.

Who a call is to

A call to a business or office also names the organization (brief.organization): its type, the first below that fits, and its full name with the branch or location, like "Joe's Pizza, Main St, Springfield". Gemini gives it on every appointment, account and inquiry call. A call to a person has none: Gemini leaves it out and never puts that person's name in it.

Your first test call

Ask Gemini for a test call, in your own words or with this. Tuvoz calls your own phone; the first time, it asks you to press 1 to confirm you agree to AI calls on that number, unless your Tuvoz assistant called you to verify it.

Make a Tuvoz test call to my phone.

Example prompts

  • @Tuvoz call Luigi's Trattoria at (415) 555-0142 and ask if they can seat 6 tonight at 7. If not, ask about 8.
  • @Tuvoz here's my order confirmation. Call the store at (312) 555-0177 and ask when it will ship.
  • @Tuvoz make a test call to my phone.

Limits and caveats

  • You add the skill and the custom app on gemini.google.com in a browser on a computer. The Gemini mobile app can't add custom apps; once both are added, calls work there too.
  • Skills and custom apps need a personal Google Account (not a work or school account), age 18 or older and Keep Activity turned on. Custom apps also need you in the US, with Gemini in English.
  • To update the skill, download the new zip and upload it with Replace skill on Gemini's Skills page.
  • Gemini asks you to confirm each action Tuvoz takes: placing the call, answering the voice agent and hanging up. Confirm an answer within about 10 seconds, or Tuvoz calls your phone with the question instead.
  • Gemini checks a live call in waits of up to 25 seconds. If it stops checking, Tuvoz calls your verified phone a few seconds after the voice agent asks a question, and asks you.
  • Your sign-in stays until you remove Tuvoz in Gemini's Connected Apps, or revoke it under Connected agents in your Tuvoz dashboard.
  • Tuvoz calls US numbers only. Calls to businesses and other people go out between 9 am and 8 pm in the called number's time zone; calls to your own phone, including questions during a call, aren't limited to those hours.

FAQ

What do I add to Gemini?
Two things: the Tuvoz skill, the playbook Gemini follows to write the brief, wait for your yes, watch the call and answer the voice agent; and the Tuvoz custom app, the tools that place and follow the call. You add both once and sign in once.
Which Google accounts can add Tuvoz?
Personal Google Accounts in the US, for people 18 or older, with Keep Activity turned on and Gemini in English. Work and school accounts can't add skills or custom apps.
Do I need to paste an API key?
No. Gemini signs in to Tuvoz with OAuth: you sign in with Google on Tuvoz's site and approve. Gemini never sees your password, and you can disconnect it any time under Connected agents.
Can I use it in the Gemini app on my phone?
Yes, once you've added the skill and the custom app on gemini.google.com from a computer. The mobile app can't add custom apps, but it can use the ones you've added.
Why does Gemini keep asking me to confirm?
Gemini asks before every action a custom app takes that changes something. For Tuvoz that's placing a call, answering the voice agent, sending it an instruction and hanging up. Checking on the call needs no confirmation. If you don't confirm an answer in time, Tuvoz calls your phone and you answer the question yourself.
How much does it cost?
$0.083 a minute, billed per second, with a 30-second minimum per answered call leg, including calls to your own phone. You start with 15 minutes of free talk time.
What if I close the chat during a call?
The call keeps going. If the voice agent has a question and Gemini isn't checking in, Tuvoz calls your verified phone, asks you, and passes the answer back into the call.
Does the business know it's an AI?
It tells them whenever they ask. Every call to a business opens with its purpose, like "Hello? I'm calling to book a table for 4 tonight." If someone asks whether it's an AI, it says "Yes, but Jane Doe has authorized me to talk to you." It never claims to be a person or you.
Can I use the same account in ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes. Each app signs in with its own key on the same Tuvoz account, and your call history is shared. You can revoke any key from the dashboard.
